| This beautiful suite commands fantastic
views across the Galway countryside. It is called the
Griffin as Merv Griffin, the owner, takes this room
when he comes to Ireland. It was also the room that
John Huston occupied during his time at St. Clerans.
The name, Griffin, was derived from the original name,
Griffy. The main tribe of Irish Griffins, O’Griffy,
were located at Thomond. They ruled a territory in the
barony of Ballygriffy, near Ennis.
Merv Griffin,
who sadly passed away on the 13th of August 2007,
is the son of Mervyn and Rita Griffin,
nee Robinson. Both parents were Irish born. Mervyn was
from County Clare and Rita was from Tipperary. Merv
was born in 1925 and made his name in the entertainment
world from an early age. He is best known for his success
in hosting talk and game shows, particularly, ‘The
Merv Griffin Show’, ‘One in a Million’,
‘Jeopardy’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’.
He is a highly successful business man, proud of his
lineage. This is clear from the love and care he has
invested in the restoration of this house.
"My father was a visionary," said his son Tony. "He loved business and continued his many projects and holdings even while hospitalized. We take solace in knowing that until the end he had his two favorites by his side--his family and his work. His legacy will be honored through the continuing operations of The Griffin Group under its current leadership and by the millions of lives he continues to affect through entertainment."
