| Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882. He
was a brilliant student and graduated from university
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1902. After college,
he wrote to Lady Gregory looking for assistance –
he had decided to leave Ireland and study medicine in
Paris. Lady Gregory put Joyce in contact with Yeats
who was in London at the time and provided him with
a number of contacts. However, he soon gave up the idea
of medicine after attending a few medical lectures.
In 1904, he met and courted Nora Barnacle. They had
a life long relationship. They lived in Trieste, Rome,
Zurich, Paris and London. They lived in dire straights,
leaving debts in every location. One of Joyce’s
short stories, The Dead, was celebrated in film, and
was directed by John Huston. His daughter, Angelica,
starred in the film. |
