Ricki's Letter

 

On December 23rd, 1958 Ricki Huston wrote to the architect, Michael Scott complaining about the oil consumption as she waited to board a 'plane at Shannon Airport.  1,000 imperial gallons in two weeks! That is 9,000 litres or 2,400 US gallons!   That was clearly unsustainable.  However it was understandable if, as she says, it was downright warm inside, and the outside air was cold and there werre 27 open chimneys, each of them discharging a flow of warm air into the sky and drawing the equivalen cold air intothe house.
